Betting on Golf

When betting on golf there is several different options. Some will bet on professional games that play on the P.G.A. tour. Others will bet amongst each other while playing a round of golf. Still others can bet on amateurs in either public, private of collegiate games. Further to which game is being bet on there are different types of bets that can be laid. There is stroke play, in which the player with the lowest score wins and skins play in which each hole of golf is worth a certain amount.

Betting on professional golf can be done in many ways. The most common is when an outright winner of a certain tournament is selected outright; if that player wins the bet is paid. This can be difficult to do considering hundreds of golfers will participate in a given tournament. Choosing a trifecta, like the kind used in horse racing is also an option. With this method a person would choose three players to finish in the top three. They can be selected in a specific order or boxed, allowing them to finish in any combination of one, two or three. Certain side bets can be made while a professional tournament is happening, for example wagering on whether a player will go up and down, also known as putting the ball in the hole from where it is located with only a chip and a putt. In actuality there is countless way to bet on professional golf and you can be as creative as you like while watching a tournament.

When wagering on your own golf game, one method is called stroke play. Stroke play simply dictates that the player with the lowest score at the end of the round wins. Often when betting on stroke play the amount the winner is paid is dependant on how many strokes that player has won by. For instance a game with the stakes of one hundred dollars per stroke would pay a player who won by seven strokes seven hundred dollars. Handicapping comes into play with a stroke games that match players of different calibers against one another. If one player is a seasoned golfer and his opponent relatively new to the game a handicap will be applied. This simply means that whatever a player’s handicap will be deducted from his score, a stockpile of allowable mistake shots if you will. At the end of the game the winner must be victorious by more than loser’s handicap. If this is not the case the player who effectively lost will win the game.

There is also skins play; in skins play each hole of golf is worth a specific monetary value. For example if the skin price is one thousand dollars per hole than there is a total of eighteen thousand dollars to be won. The money is then awarded to whichever player wins that hole. So if by the end of the round one player has won all eighteen holes he will take home all eighteen thousand dollars. On the other hand if the winner is victorious by a narrower margin, say ten holes to eight? He will take home two thousand dollars, or the difference between the holes each player has won.
